How a Radiology Machine is QA’d by Trained Specialists Using a Phantom and Dosimeter

Quality control of a radiology machine is a specialized process carried out exclusively by trained, qualified specialists — including a Radiation Protection Expert — following procedures developed in accordance with IEC 60601, Euratom requirements, and the EUREF protocol.

In the first step, the trained specialist places the reference phantom on the machine and images it under exposures that precisely replicate real clinical conditions, in line with procedures based on IEC 60601. The resulting image is then carefully evaluated by the specialist for contrast, spatial resolution, and uniformity, to confirm the machine can still detect the finest tissue structures.

At the same time, the Radiation Protection Expert uses a specialized dosimeter to precisely measure the machine’s output dose during those same exposures, comparing it against Euratom requirements and EUREF reference standards to guarantee full patient safety.

Finally, the findings from both specialists are analyzed together, based on procedures developed under IEC 60601, Euratom, and EUREF, to determine whether the machine delivers the highest possible image quality at the lowest possible dose, in compliance with international standards. Only upon final approval by these trained specialists is the machine certified fit for continued clinical use.
